Male guardian Smallmouth bass surrounded by hundreds of "Black Fry". These newly hatched bass are about a quarter of an inch in length and jet black in color. After swarming and feeding in the immediate area of the nest under the watchful eye of the male for about 2 weeks they will turn green and disburse to other areas of the lake, or pond in which they were born to feed and grow. During this time the male will not feed and will guard and/or remove any debris or potential threats from the nest area.
